Unit 12: The Human Muscular and Skeletal Systems
You are required to write an illustrated report demonstrating your understanding of the human muscular and skeletal systems. Your report must cover the sections outlined below.
SECTION ONE
Demonstrate your understanding of the anatomy, organization, and function of the muscular system by
• Outlining the structure of muscle tissue types, cells, and connective tissues.
• Explaining the contraction of striated muscle fibers (Sliding Filament theory).
SECTION TWO
Demonstrate your understanding of the anatomy, organization, and function of the skeletal system by analyzing the structure and function of the skeletal system including the main type of bone, connective tissues, protective structures, and joints.
SECTION THREE
Demonstrate your understanding of how the muscular system and skeletal system interact in locomotion by:
• Explaining the biomechanics of levers when muscular forces are transmitted by the skeletal system.
• Explaining the development and repair of bones and the effect of disease and age on locomotion.
GUIDANCE
Relevant theory must be referenced where appropriate and you must provide a references list and bibliography. Your report should also contain appropriate drawings and diagrams to support your commentary. If these are taken from published sources they must be referenced accordingly. The report should be a maximum of 2,000 words in length. This word limit is the absolute maximum you are permitted.
