Unit Introduction

Organisational behaviour is concerned with understanding, explaining, and predicting the behaviour of individuals in the workplace and can assist in developing practical solutions to organisational and managerial problems. Individuals, whether acting in isolation or collectively as part of a group, engage in actions and behaviours that can have a positive or negative impact on company performance and the achievement of strategic goals. It is, therefore, essential that those who are involved in managing and leading people in organisations, acquire insight and expertise in organisational behaviour.

Unit Aim

The aim of this unit is to develop knowledge and understanding of how organisational behaviour concepts, theories and techniques can be applied in work and management settings to enhance individual, team and organisational performance. Students will be able to apply this knowledge in a variety of business situations. They will appreciate how effective application of organisational behaviour principles can be used to explain why people behave and act in particular ways and to predict how employees will respond to certain demands. The unit also develops student understanding of the influence of culture, the operation of power and politics in organisations and how these variables influence the actions and behaviour of people in an organisational context.

Task A Scenario:

SportsDirect is a renowned UK-based retail company specialising in sports equipment, clothing, and accessories. Despite its widespread presence and success, the company has faced challenges with declining employee motivation, resulting in decreased productivity and staff turnover. As part of the managerial team, your task is to develop a comprehensive plan to improve employee motivation and create a more effective workforce. You have a team of 50 members of the staff. You are responsible for training, motivating, managing, and inspiring all of them. Some of the team members require training and personal development to perform better in their job roles.

Your assignment involves analysing your own personality traits and attributes, understanding the value of personality and perception in managerial relationships, and applying content and process theories of motivation to develop strategies for enhancing and maintaining an effective workforce.

Task B Scenario

You are a member of the Training and Development department at SportsDirect, a leading retail company specialising in sports equipment and apparel. The company has recognised the importance of developing effective teamworking and understanding organisational dynamics to enhance employee performance and achieve organisational goals. As part of the management team, you have been given a task of leading a project to improve teamworking and explore the impact of organisational factors on employee behaviour. You have a team of 50 members of the staff as a leader.

You are responsible for training, motivating, managing, and inspiring all of them. These team members require training and personal development to perform better in their job roles. As a manager, before allocating a team- project work to the members of your staff, you are required to help them understand and demonstrate effective team skills.
