Objectives
• To improve the understanding of security problems, attacks and countermeasures in practice.
• To gain experience in conducting research in the literature on system security, structuring and presenting a report.
• To gain access and understanding of research to solve system security questions.

System Security Research
Security is changing all the time due to changing environment and requirements. For this reason, you need to keep up to with the state-of-the-art.

About USENIX Security Symposium:

“The USENIX Security Symposium brings together researchers,  practitioners, system administrators, system programmers, and others interested in the latest advances in the security of computer systems and networks”. USENIX Security Symposium is one of the most regarded conferences in system security and the forum to report the most recent security technologies, methodologies, and attacks.

You can choose any paper in any technical track listed, watch the video, read the paper, do your research and write the report.

Each report needs to have two parts:

Section 1 Provide a summary of the presentation. You should include

• Background: what is this paper about? what is the motivation why should I care about the technology/attack/defense (the subject) in the paper? how will the subject affect the real world?

• Related work : is the subject in the paper the first of its kind? Has anything similar been done in the past? How good/bad the subject in the paper is, compared to previous work?

• The subject: describe the technology/attack/defense presented in the paper. You need to show that you have a fairly good understanding of the technical content.

Section 2  Thought experiment. Think about what you have learned from the paper, and come up with:
• A countermeasure if the paper is about attack
• An attack if the paper is about defense
• A new application of the subject in the paper, e.g. use it to attack a different system or counter a different attack.
• An improvement that would make the subject more effective/ efficient/ practical etc.
