The Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Services can be selected, sized to meet building loads, and then installed, the Services Design: Building services and sustainability Report, UOS, UK
University | University Of Salford (UOS) |
Subject | Building services and sustainability Report |
TASKS:
Before the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Services can be selected, sized to meet building loads, and then installed, the Services Design Engineer must determine the internal environmental conditions that have to be achieved regardless of the external environmental conditions. The internal conditions need to be maintained throughout the year despite the bitter cold of winter and the, now not-unusual, intense heat of summer. Services Designers typically consider the ‘thermal’, ‘visual’ and ‘acoustic’ internal environment together with the requirement for a high standard of ‘indoor air quality (IAQ), with aspects of sustainability and energy consumption forming an ‘umbrella’ focus over all decisions. Additionally, different types of buildings, and rooms of differing usage within the same building, will require different environmental conditions.
Once the task of selecting suitable environmental conditions has been achieved the Services Designer can then determine room heat losses and gains, ventilation (and cooling) requirements, lighting requirements and sound level requirements and, crucially, how they can acceptably be installed in the building, or accounted for, from an access, physical and aesthetic perspective.
Therefore, using the floor plan as the basis for your analyses and calculations, you will carry out the following tasks:
a) Identify standard services design variables and typical values for 4 rooms and/or spaces of differing usage within the office building and present your values in a tabular format. Values should be determined from nationally recognized data sources for the following environmental variables:
⦁ Winter and Summer internal and external design air temperature values,
⦁ Required lighting Illumination levels, and
⦁ Acoustic Noise Rating (NR) requirements.
Discuss why the above set of environmental variables is important regarding the design of engineering systems within the building. List all assumptions used in the determination of these values. Research approaches are demonstrated in lectures (Typically, 1 page)
b) Based on a design building heat loss of 50 W/m2 calculate all room heat losses, determine the total building heat loss, and select an appropriately sized gas-fired boiler, or boilers, for the whole building and locate it/them in the Services Plant Room. Provide the manufacturer’s literature as appropriate to demonstrate your selection procedures and explain your thinking as to why one or more boilers were selected. Finish by providing a brief commentary on what other, more ‘Green’, heating options might be possible. Procedures are demonstrated in lectures (Typically, 1 ½ pages excluding calculations)
c) Select and size, using earlier determined room heat losses together with manufacturers’ literature as appropriate, a suitable type of heat emitter or emitters, on a room-by-room basis, for all rooms and spaces in the building as felt appropriate. Some rooms/spaces may require different heating approaches than that provided in most areas.
