IF6101 This module is designed to prepare students for study in third-level programmes involving mathematics and statistics: Mathematics Course Work, UOL, UK
University | University of Leeds (UOL) |
Subject | IF6101 Mathematics Course Work |
Module Learning Aims:
This module is designed to prepare students for study in third-level programs involving mathematics and statistics. By participating successfully in this module, students will develop their understanding of, and be able to use, key mathematical skills and mathematical language and symbols in a broad variety of contexts. In addition, they will develop the ability to think about what they are learning and place it in the context of their prior knowledge and future possible uses, and to solve problems logically, including problems set in a non-mathematical context.
Module Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Solve, using standard mathematical language, symbolism, and reasoning, problems formulated in mathematical terms, in situations where the solution of such problems would normally require the correct application of basic properties of integers, real and complex numbers, sets, and standard set operations, algebraic expressions, relations of equality and inequality, polynomial functions, rational functions, standard trigonometrical functions, logarithm functions, and exponential functions.
- Determine rates of change of variable quantities, determine the situations in which variable quantities attain maximum and minimum values, and determine areas of geometrical figures, using techniques of differential and integral calculus that combine knowledge of derivatives and integrals of standard polynomial, trigonometric, logarithm and exponential functions with the exploitation of systematic rules that include the Product, Quotient and Chain Rules of differential calculus.
- Determine the probability of particular combinations of events in simple scenarios that involve random processes, given knowledge of the likelihood of particular events that are independent of one another, through the application of basic principles of probability theory; and applications of binomial probability.
- Calculate and present information that provides statistical information on data sets resulting from data gathering exercises such as scientific experiments and feedback from questionnaires, where such information may be presented both in numerical form and also in graphical depictions, e.g. using pie charts and histograms.
- Justify through reasoned logical argument fundamental axioms and theorems in Euclidean geometry and use these to solve geometrical problems.
- Apply strategies to develop the learning skills required in this subject at the third level.
